Terra Madre dinner: Celebrate with Slow food Brisbane Inc. Convivium (www.slowfoodbrisbane.com.au) on December 9

Terra Madre day is a worldwide day to promote food that is good, clean and fair and acknowledge the importance of the regions, cultures and communities working to protect and promote such food. http://www.slowfood.com/terramadreday/
The dinner will be created from “wasted” local food donated to us principally by Foodbank and will celebrate farmers and highlight Foodbank’s amazing approach to dealing with “waste” food. http://www.foodbank.com.au/default.asp?id=1,24,,57

When: Friday, 9th December at 6pm for AGM followed by dinner at 7pm
Where: Christ Church Milton
Guest speaker: Ken McMillan, General Manager, Foodbank Queensland
Cost: $60 per head for members and non members. All welcome. (proceeds to be donated to Foodbank).
RSVP and payment to Gillian Poole on 3856 2951 by 1st December
The idea for the dinner was inspired by two events, one in Germany called the long lunch, attended by Carlo Petrini* and the second, Michael D’Occhio’s talk on Australia’s role in Global Food Security** where he raised our awareness of global waste and the work of Foodbank Queensland which captures produce that does not make it to market; food that is perfectly edible but unwanted for a variety of reasons is made available to feed the country’s needy by redistributing surplus food. It is estimated that as much as 20% of all food produced is unsaleable for a variety of reasons. This produce may be seconds, surplus, or may be rejected or knocked out – the market may simply be glutted.
